Why do put (natural) winemakers wax on top of the cork? Because it looks nice. There’s no practical reason for it to be applied. During my recent stay at the Loire I asked a few winemakers, also because I was wondering whether I should use it myself, for ›my‹ wine. The more or less unanimous answer was: »Let it be! It makes no sense and is annoying to apply. It takes ages.« It’s bad for the environment, too. Equally bad like the aluminium cap. There were disputes in regards to whether you need anything covering the cork to properly apply the tax sticker (at least in France) or whether there were other methods to register your bottles with the authorities – or put the sticker directly on the bottle, like a price tag.
