At 9 o’clock we are in the vineyard. In the car I sat on my gloves to warm them. It’s gray and slightly damp, not too cold. Thomas explains everything in detail and carefully. His helper Erica is very nice. Pruning is fun! I go through the rows and make a pruning mark on the branches (or does one say twigs?) that I want to prune, the branches that should remain on the plant and later bear fruit. In the next step, Thomas looks at my markings – in most cases I’m right, which makes me happy! I’m not always entirely sure about cutting off the branches that are, well, supposed to be cut off. How far down do I go? How close to the trunk? I’ll have to have that explained to me in more detail next week.
